1937 Experiment in Remote Learning by Radio Holds Lessons for Today

Across the country, the debate around whether schools should return to in-person learning or continue with remote instruction has been a contentious one.

But remote learning during an outbreak is not new, as one scholar recently discovered.

Dr. Katie Foss is a professor of media studies at Middle Tennessee State University. Her recent article on an experimental "radio school" in 1937 Chicago has been making the rounds on social media.

In this interview with Reclaiming the Narrative producer Darien Lamen, Foss says the episode from 1937 has some important lessons to teach us about our current moment.
